General Headshot Preparation Tips
Over the years I have photographed people who are both comfortable in front of a camera and those who, lets just say would rather jump out of a plane than have their picture taken. No matter which category you fall into, by following this checklist, you'll be well-prepared and have headshots that will leave a lasting impression in your personal and professional endeavours. Just relax, be yourself. Let me do all the work.
Before arriving at the studio
Before arriving at the studio there are a few things that I would recommend doing to prepare for your headshot session.
Define Your Purpose
Clarify the purpose of your headshot. Align your look and style accordingly.
Wardrobe Selection
Choose clothing that aligns with your industry, company culture, and the intended purpose of your headshot. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that complement your skin tone. Avoid bright or distracting colors.
Grooming
Ensure your hair is well-styled, nails are neat, and facial hair is well-groomed if applicable.
Skin Care
Moisturize your skin for a healthy, glowing look. Use minimal makeup for a natural appearance, focusing on an even skin tone and subdued colors.
Rest
Get a good night’s sleep before the shoot to prevent under-eye circles and ensure you look refreshed.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the shoot to maintain healthy skin and a vibrant appearance.
Accessories
Choose simple, classic accessories that won’t distract from your face. Remove any flashy or statement accessories.
Practice Expressions
Practice various facial expressions in the mirror, such as smiling naturally and looking approachable. Relax your face to avoid stiffness. Familiarize yourself with common headshot poses. I will also guide you during the shoot. Practice your posture and body language to convey confidence and approachability.
Clothing Check
Iron your chosen outfit and ensure it’s free of wrinkles and lint.
Multiple Outfits
If unsure about attire, bring a couple of options. I can help you decide which works best on camera.
Extras to Bring
Pack essential items such as makeup for touch-ups, a hairbrush or comb, oil-blotting sheets, tissues, and a bottle of water.
At the studio
Arrive Early
Arrive at the shoot location a bit early to allow time for any last-minute touch-ups and to settle any nerves.
Communicate
Discuss your preferences and goals with me beforehand, so I am able to tailor the session to your needs.
Relax
Stay relaxed and confident during the shoot.
Proper Timing
Schedule the shoot when you’re at your best – both in terms of energy levels and appearance.
Now that you have gone through the checklist and made detailed notes about how to prepare for your headshot session, have a look at which headshot package is right for you. As always, if you have questions, feel free to call or text me and I would be happy help.
